He led the campaign that secured air-conditioning in every NYC public school classroom, after working with students on a report showing that 25 percent of classrooms had no A/C — making it #TooHotToLearn for kids and teachers.Brad authored the<a href="https://www.nyccfb.info/media/blog/nyc-says-no-dark-money-elections" style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"> Independent Expenditure Disclosure Act</a>, giving NYC the most aggressive SuperPAC disclosure requirements in the country. He brought<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/01/nyregion/for-some-new-yorkers-a-grand-experiment-in-participatory-budgeting.html" style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"> participatory budgeting</a> to NYC and sponsored the legislation to implement ranked-choice voting here.&nbsp; <h3>Holding power accountable as Comptroller</h3><img src="https://run.imgix.net/68d35dd5-f7a6-4a7e-9057-c3908286d00f/e8ab8e41-0b32-47c6-a7d4-594f304a9815/e8ab8e41-0b32-47c6-a7d4-594f304a9815.jpg?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C0%2C1179%2C1175&amp;w=1500" alt="" caption="" align="right" alignwidth="30" variant="framed">As New York City's Comptroller, Brad served as the city's chief financial and accountability officer, leading a team of 700 professionals. He held the Adams administration relentlessly accountable, uncovered waste and abuse, and saved hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars. Brad sounded the alarm on Mayor Adams's rampant use of emergency procurement, forcing the cancellation of a $432 million no-bid contract with the unqualified vendor DocGo. He returned millions of dollars in stolen wages to workers by enforcing the prevailing wage. And he protected NYC retirees from being forced into inferior Medicare Advantage plans.Under Brad's stewardship, New York City's public pension funds earned strong returns and grew to record levels. He led the nation in responsible investing — divesting $4 billion dollars from fossil fuels, and pressing Starbucks and Amazon to respect workers' rights. He has continued to accompany immigrants to their court dates alongside fellow elected officials, clergy, and community members, because no New Yorker should have to face Trump's deportation machine alone. When the race came down to its final days, Brad cross-endorsed Zohran Mamdani, uniting the progressive movement behind a shared vision of a city that everyone can afford, and where everyone is welcome. In the process, they helped show that Jewish New Yorkers and Muslim New Yorkers do not need to be divided from each other – that we can work together for the good of the city we love.&nbsp;Now, Brad is taking that fight to Washington – because this moment is a five-alarm fire for our democracy and our working families, and we need leaders who will fight, not fold. <h2>Here’s a little more about the good neighbors featured in Brad’s first ad:</h2>Brian Colon was arrested as a teenager, and then he turned his life around, with help from affordable housing and employment assistance provided by the <a href="https://fifthave.org/">Fifth Avenue Committee</a>, where Brad was Executive Director from 1993 to 2003. Brian and Brad worked to create a program that helps former prisoners get housing and jobs when they return to their community. David Neustadt retired after a three decade career in communications, working for city and state elected officials. He’s praising Brad for his work in the fight against Eric Adams’ plan to force City retirees off of Medicare onto a privatized HMO plan known misleadingly as “Medicare Advantage.” As Comptroller, Brad <a href="https://comptroller.nyc.gov/newsroom/comptroller-lander-declines-to-register-medicare-advantage-contract-pending-litigation/">refused to register the contract</a>. In Congress, Brad will fight for Medicare for All. Anh-Thu Nguyen learned about Greenbrook Partners, the private equity-backed real estate company that bought the building where she lives on Prospect Park West in 2021, when she sought a lease renewal – and they instead told her and her neighbors they had 90 days to leave. She soon learned they were buying hundreds of other buildings in Brooklyn in the wake of the pandemic, with the intention of kicking tenants out and jacking up rents across the board. But Anh-Thu and her neighbors <a href="https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2022/05/private-equity-brooklyn-park-slope-greenbrook-nw1-mcnam-schumer/">fought back</a>. Working closely with Brad, they organized tenants in Greenbrook buildings, and they remain in their homes today. Affordable housing has been at the center of Brad’s career, from his days at the Fifth Avenue Committee, to the work for the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/18/opinion/mayor-lander-gowanus-cuomo-mamdani.html">Gowanus Neighborhood Rezoning</a>, one of the most ambitious and inclusive affordable housing efforts in recent decades. In Congress, he’ll fight for the country’s first “social bonds” and “street-to-home vouchers,” to make sure everyone has a place to call home.Maria Nunziata was the beloved principal of P.S. 130 in Windsor Terrace for two decades, leading with conviction and grace, and shaping the school into a beacon of nurturing education. She and Brad led the effort that resulted in P.S. 130 becoming a two-school campus, with lower grades in the treasured old building, and upper grades in a new building nearby, along with M.S. 439. Then, they worked together to redevelop the playground through “<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/01/nyregion/for-some-new-yorkers-a-grand-experiment-in-participatory-budgeting.html">participatory budgeting</a>,” which Brad helped bring to New York City. And they took it one step further, working with the <a href="https://www.brooklynpaper.com/kids-break-ground-on-new-student-designed-playground-at-wterrace-school/">Trust for Public Land</a> on a program that enabled P.S 130 first-graders to design the new playground, one of the most joyful spots in the neighborhood. The belief in diverse school communities led Brad to work with parents and educators to <a href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/bradlander/new-york-city-brooklyn-schools-segregated-integrated">desegregate the middle schools of District 15</a> – one of the fights that Brad is proudest of across his career.Marek Barnette and Rosa Lander grew up in Park Slope and went to New York City public schools. Marek is an advocacy manager at DREAM Academy, and Rosa is an investigator at Brooklyn Defender Services – and to Brad and Meg’s great joy, they both continue to live in Brooklyn. They are rooting hard for both Knicks and Liberty championships this year. Jill Bernstein is an editorial director and Brooklyn mom. She was worried about a dangerous intersection near her home in the Columbia Waterfront neighborhood, so she reached out to Brad when he was her City Councilmember. They were rejected twice by DOT, but they kept fighting until they got a stoplight on her corner. Brad’s office was known for its relentless constituent service work. From spotlights to speedbumps, from passports to SNAP benefits, Brad knows that government must deliver for people – and he’ll make sure it does. Nancy Romer is Professor Emerita at Brooklyn College, a climate justice advocate and labor organizer. She co-leads the Environmental Justice Working Group of the Professional Staff Congress of CUNY (PSC), which has endorsed Brad for Congress. She is an active member of Public Power NY, coordinating efforts to advance decarbonizing CUNY's 300+ buildings, and she helped create the Brooklyn Food Coalition. Romer served on Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani’s Transition Team Subcommittee on Transportation, Climate and Infrastructure in 2025. Ruth Messinger was Manhattan Borough President, the President of the American Jewish World Service, and she’s a New York City legend. She taught Brad how to build coalitions, and how to show up in tough fights. These days, she’s fighting on behalf of asylum seekers and immigrants in New York City. Brad Lander is a life-long champion for workers rights. He delivered groundbreaking job protections to freelancers and fast-food workers, and a $15 minimum wage to delivery workers and Uber drivers. He secured paid sick leave for New Yorkers. He helped stop Eric Adams from pushing the city’s retirees onto privatized Medicare Advantage. That required taking on Uber, GrubHub, McDonalds, health care lobbyists – and winning. In the coming era of AI, automation, and social media, billionaire-driven inequality will get worse, unless we do something about it. Brad will fight to increase the federal minimum wage, win Medicare for All, and strengthen the rights of workers to organize. He’ll bring his innovative approach to winning dignity for NYC’s gig workers in a changing economy to a national level. Brad will always put working people first — not billionaires.

Workers, Not Just the Wealthy

New York City should be a place everyone can live with dignity – working and middle-class families, immigrants and those who have been here for generations, Jews and Muslims, queer and trans people, disabled people, older New Yorkers and young people just starting out. That requires a city where everyone can afford a home. That’s the work of Brad’s career, from his start fighting evictions and building affordable housing, to the Gowanus Neighborhood Rezoning, to his most innovative investment as Comptroller that saved 35,000 affordable rental units put at risk when Signature Bank failed. It’s also time for a knockdown fight to protect your neighbors.Newly minted congressional candidate Brad Lander appeared to be aiming for duality today with his House campaign launch video, which channels Mister Rogers in its whimsy while referencing the Trump administration’s “dark oppression” in its script. The nearly three-minute spot features cartoon birds fluttering across the screen juxtaposed with a quick clip of Lander being arrested by ICE agents at 26 Federal Plaza.

Brad believes we need a foreign policy that emphasizes global peacemaking over militarism, that defends human rights and international norms, and that defeats authoritarianism globally through alliances that address inequality and poverty. He's had the courage to stand up for these beliefs throughout his life – for freedom for Soviet Jewry, against the war in Iraq, and to stop Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory and the destruction of Gaza. Brad knows that Israelis will only be safe and free when Palestinians are free and safe. Brad will fight to rebuild USAID, save lives, and protect civilians from Ukraine to Sudan to Venezuela. He will push back against an imperial presidency – whichever party is in power – and restore Congress' constitutional role to set foreign policy. And help craft a new Democratic foreign policy that does better to build bridges at home and abroad.

And status quo Democrats are not meeting the moment,” he said. “And somebody who’s a quarter-billionaire, who’s got all that outside spending on his behalf, is not going to stand up and fight for working-class people for the change we need.”
